Reimagining a Victorian Townhouse for New Needs
In the vibrant area of Stoke Newington, Hackney, this Victorian period townhouse was reimagined to address the unique needs of a single family with a child struggling to enter the property market. Originally a four-bedroom home, our goal was to enhance the existing space to provide ample living areas and privacy while maintaining a sense of togetherness.
We approached the renovation by reconfiguring the layout to maximise both personal privacy and shared family experiences. This involved innovative design solutions within the constraints of the historic Victorian architecture, ensuring that the home not only meets the family’s current needs but also adapts to future changes.

Designers Have a Duty to Craft Timeless Spaces, Envisioning at Least 20 Years into the Future
PROJECT GOAL.
Balancing Privacy and Togetherness
The brief emerged from the challenges of a competitive property market that prevented the daughter from purchasing her own home. The design response involved a thorough rethinking of the property’s layout to create interactive, gallery-like spaces while preserving the essence of a family home.
A significant challenge was to provide sufficient living space and privacy without making the home feel cramped, all while maintaining its quality as a family residence. Our approach involved redefining the use of internal rooms to ensure that each area serves multiple functions, allowing the home to accommodate the evolving needs of its inhabitants.

Blending Tradition and Modernity. in a Victorian Townhouse
This project involved transforming the conventional Victorian townhouse layout into a series of interconnected spaces that defy traditional expectations. Full-height, room-width groove panelling was employed to create an expressive feature, complemented by hidden bespoke joinery. An open fireplace, stripped down to reveal its heritage, serves as a central focal point, celebrating the home’s historical essence.
The design includes stepped access to a social area perfect for hosting lively dining parties, which seamlessly extends to a private garden. The aim was to surpass the expectations typically associated with a first-time property, providing a subtly luxurious experience that combines space with quality.

Connecting People to Places Through the Emotional Power of Colour and Material
A Contemporary Art Gallery Within a Family Home
The design approach seamlessly integrates Mid-Century modern elements with a minimalist aesthetic, harmonising raw materials, clean lines, and a restrained palette with occasional bold colours.
This modern sophistication complements the Victorian home’s classic charm and its rich art collection, creating a space that is both inviting and stylish. Inspired by the homeowners’ passion for contemporary, classic, and vintage art, the redesign treats the home as a private gallery. The layout is guided by the intricacy and playfulness of origami, with colours, textures, and materials interwoven in a fluid, seamless manner.
A unique feature of the design is the Russian doll-like incorporation of a one-bedroom apartment for the daughter, nested within the main property. This solution allows for privacy while preserving a sense of unity, ensuring that the space remains both functional and connected.

TESTIMONIAL. WHAT OUR CLIENT SAYS
Mary K. [WRITER]
"Working with Mischa and her team was an absolute joy. She took the unpractical layout of our Victorian city house and transformed it into a space for modern multi-generational living under one roof. Mischa’s expertise was a vital component of maximising the natural light, bringing in the missing colour pop and making the space work for us the extra notch. We were so happy with her work and her fresh twist on classical property that we’d have no hesitation to use her again"
